Upper Gardner Street is situated in the centre of the cosmopolitan area of Brighton and Hove called the North Laine. This area is well known for its vibrancy and vast range of largely independent retailers selling pretty much anything you can dream up! During the weekend much of the North Laine is closed to traffic and you can wander freely between the tables and chairs of the cafes and bars exploring - it's impossible not to enjoy this area and it really does have something for everyone!
Upper Gardner Street runs parallel with Kensington Gardens, between North Road and Gloucester Road. During the week it's an ordinairy street - part residential and part commercial - with an antiques warehouse, stores and workshops. |
But on Saturdays the street is transformed into a traffic free open air market, with traders selling a whole range of both new and secondhand items. It's been like this since the early 1900's when the borough council of Brighton set the street aside for use on Saturdays by what were then called "barrow boys". Now they're called market traders, but take a walk down Upper Gardner Street on a Saturday and you'll still find plenty of interesting objects and goods for sale, whether you're a collector of items from yesteryear, doing your weekly fruit and veg shop, or looking for things to improve or decorate your home. |
